Trailhead

Welcome to the ATventure!

April 2011 will be the start to a long walk in the woods; I am planning for a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail (AT)!

I will be hiking with a great friend, Frank. We will begin our trek in northern Georgia on top of Springer mountain and meander our way north, 2,175 miles, to Mt. Katahdin located in northern Maine. The journey will take approximately four to six months, intersect 14 states, and take roughly five million footsteps.

Why are we embarking on a seemingly senseless voyage? Well, because! As an avid outdoor enthusiast this adventure is a chance of a lifetime. I seek this challenge to test my mettle as a human and to discover the self that lies dormant during the 9-to-5 debt-dodging that we call "modern civilization".

I will be connected to the grid to obtain nutrition, information, and communication (and to update this blog.) The interconnectedness of This existence is unavoidable and can be embraced; through this blog Frank and I will share our AT ventures with the hope that you all will enjoy the experience with us.

Our departure date is loosely set for some day during the first week in April. Though it's nearly three months away we're busy planning the logistics: equipment, food, physical training, food, mental preparation, and FOOD must all be addressed in order to set ourselves up for a successful AT thru-hike.

So please follow our blog and join me and Frank on this epic trek across our nation's longest marked footpath!

  1. Congrats!! Really wish I could join you guys but I will follow you everyday and live vicariously through your adventure. Run the 12, be safe, and most of all take this opportunity for some serious introspection.

  3. Thank you for the support! I'm psyched.

I walked four miles home from the office tonight in freezing rain and I felt great. Although I treated my rain shell just last week, it appears that I'm back in the market for a shell that is more water resistant (or water proof).

    Yes, I'll run the 12.

Ben, I'll definitely let you know when I'm in VA. It seems that you're an excellent chef - I'll look forward to seeing you and your meals on the trail!

  6. Adam, I am about half way through the AT book I told you about, and it sounds as though you and Frank are in for a great adventure. I'm anxious now for you to get started and am looking forward to traveling with you by way of your blogs and journal. I assume this will be the best place to follow you both, am I right?
